'MUSEUM OF ME' FACEBOOK APP: THE ULTIMATE VANITY PROJECT

As if Generation Me needed another online pedestal to flaunt its inflated sense of self-worth, along comes this: Intel's Museum of Me app for Facebook, the latest virtual temple of exhibitionism and narcissism.
Developed essentially as an ad for Intel's Core i5 processors, the Museum of Me is ideal for the yawning vainglorious hordes who have grown bored at staring into the low-tech reflecting pool of their Facebook profile and are looking for a more glamorous way to post Blue Steel-face GPOY's. Facebook's wall is certainly no place to categorically display one's Likes. Puh-lease! They belong on the wall of a museum, on video screens that surround a giant three dimensional thumbs-up statue.
If "creating a visual archive of your social life" in a trapezoidal Xanadu that looks like it was built by architectZaha Hadid - if that sounds like the bee's knees - then connect to Facebook via the Museum of Me's website and Intel will download your Facebook data and fill the halls and galleries of your very own museum.
Here you'll be waltzed through a video tour of your museum, showered by the flurried tinklings of Takagi Masakatsu's soundtrack. In various "rooms" you can witness virtual strangers gawking at photos, including those of your friends and ones that you've uploaded, dramatically enlarged on your museum wall. There are rooms, also, that exhibit a scramble of words you've used on your profile, as well as a display of places you've traveled.
Your tour ends with a spectacular grand finale, an homage that even the most decadent techie could appreciate. A squad of rank-and-file robotic arms pluck photos from your mid-air permanent collection only to assemble a photo collage revealing your museum's most coveted possession: you.

LOCKETS STORE USB DRIVES, KEEP DATA HANDY

USB Locket Combined
USB Lockets: Full Size and Medical Lockets: $250 / Mini Version: $170
Data may hold a certain beauty for statisticians and their ilk, but for the rest of us its appeal is purely practical. Until now. New York designer Emily Rothschild has created three necklaces featuring lockets that hold a 2GB flash drive.
Inspired by a style from the early 1900s, Rothschild's full-size USB locket is available plated with either 24K satin gold or black rhodium. Either way, a detachable 2GB USB flash drive hidden within can be used to store and share personal photographs and files. After that piece won a Blogger's Choice Award at the New York International Gift Fair earlier this year, Rothschild went on to create a smaller, rectangular version. A medical version, meanwhile, is designed for storing personal medical records and critical contact information; on that one, the flash drive itself can be engraved to make the most pertinent information immediately visible to medical professionals.

Are New MacBook Pros on the Horizon?

macbook pro
Image: Apple
Did you hear that?
That’s the sound of yet another Apple rumor.
Apple might be highly secretive, but that doesn’t stop everyone else from chatting. AppleInsider reported Tuesday the company is preparing a refresh of the MacBook Pro line ahead of the holiday shopping season. The motivation for this unexpected surprise comes from Intel, which decided its next-gen Core i-Series mobile platform will debut the second quarter of 2012.
What will the refresh entail? Just “marginal speed bumps” to the computers’ processors, according to AppleInsider. Other than that, don’t expect any material changes. The timing might be soon too. Apple’s back-to-school promotion ends Sept. 20, and sources say the refresh might come shortly after, before the end of the month.
While the refresh is unexpected, the reason “is likely geared towards assuring the Mac maker’s top-selling notebook family remains competitive in the market until Intel releases its next-generation Ivy Bridge platform at some point in 2012,” AppleInsider reported. Ivy Bridge, which is expected to be 60 percent faster with its integrated graphics, was originally expected to be released in late 2011, but leaked documents suggest it is now slated in the first half of 2012.
A week ago, Intel refreshed its Sandy Bridge processors, lowering the costs on some chips, phasing out a few others and adding four new Core i7 chips suitable for the MacBook Pro. Apple last updated the MacBook Pro limeup in February with dual-core Sandy Bridge Core i5 and i7 chips, with speeds up to 2.3 gigahertz.
If Apple does indeed introduce new MacBook Pros and iPhones this fall, it’ll make shopping that much more tempting.

The Cheapest Gadgets for Black Friday

black friday apple
Black Friday at the Apple store in New York City, 2006. Image: jardenberg/Creative Commons
It might only be the beginning of fall, but some people are already gearing up for Black Friday.
dealnews released its fourth annual predictions on gadget sales for this November, using a methodoogy taking into account how much prices have fallen year to date, this time last year, on Black Friday last year and the year before that.
Before we get to the list, a couple disclaimers from dealnews.
First, these are predictions of the best deals for the Black Friday season. They’re the lowest of the lows, not averages. (See our Methodology section on the last page.) Second, some of these deals will involve mail-in rebates. However, the good news is that most won’t. Best Buy, OfficeMax, and Walmart have long given up on mail-in rebates after numerous customer complaints. Third, we’re predicting that these deals occur during “Black Friday Season,” a dealnews euphemism for mid-November to Cyber Monday.
Now for the fun stuff. (Make a mental note of this list for your holiday shopping in two months.)

scale mouse
Image: Brando
Brando has come out with a computer mouse with an integrated digital scale. Because, you know, you might need weigh something while you’re using computer.
For $22, this optical mouse-scale hybrid can be yours, to use while say, ahem, weigh out herbs — for a salad or something. While the mouse is powered by USB, the scale uses two AAA batteries, a set of which is included. The scale can read up to 500 grams, in units of grams, ounces, carats and a unit abbreviated gn, which is either a Grain or giganewton.
We’ve seen multipurpose mice before. The main drawback is that palms rest on the part of the mouse that usually contains the non-mouse function, in this case, the scale itself.

India Debuts World’s Cheapest Tablet

india tablet aakash
Image: Reuters
The cheapest tablet on the market? Aakash, a seven-inch Android device the Indian government isgiving 100,000 free copies of to students. After a trial run, the tablet will cost $60 in stores, and $35 for students after government subsidies.
In 2009, the Indian government pledged to bring a cheap laptop to help improve the quality of education. After producing an underwhelming first prototype, the company of two brothers in Canada, Suneet and Raja Tuli, won the tender for the tablet. Their company, London-based DataWind developed the tablet with the Indian Institute of Technology and will provide 100,000 devices initially. At launch, the government already gave out 500 copies to mixed reception, with negative reviews focused largely on the slowness of the product. If the trial run yields success, the next order is a hefty one: 1 million units.

When designing the machine, DataWind tested running video for two hours in 48-degree Celsius (118 degrees Fahrenheit) temperature to mimic a northern Indian summer.
Aakash has two USB ports, a three-hour battery life and supports video conferencing. The tablet runs on 256 megabytes of RAM and a 660-megahertz processor.

STEVE JOBS: DENTS IN THE UNIVERSE

Steve Jobs obit iPad
Steve Jobs was a visionary, a marketer and a perfectionist, but he was also a quote machine. One of his better lines was this exhortation to Apple employees: "Make a dent in the universe."
Apple chief executive Steve Jobs died too soon Wednesday at age 56 -- only months after his resignation as chief executive of the company he co-founded, but long after he, his colleagues, and those inspired and empowered by their work had pounded a series of dents into the universe.
For me, the first one felt was the arrival of the Mac. To sit down in front of a Mac Plus in high school (especially if you, hypothetically speaking, had an IBM PCjr at home) was to be awakened: Yes, this is how things could work. What you saw on the screen could be what came out of the printer, not a crude, 80-characters-per-line simulation.
But before I'd figured that out, Jobs had long since been kicked out of Apple.
He rebooted his career to found NeXT Computer -- the World Wide Web was developed on a NeXT workstation -- and help launch Pixar. Too few paid attention to either move at the time, not least since Apple prospered without him for several years.
By the time the rot had set in at Apple in the mid-1990s and the increasingly desperate firm bought NeXT in 1997, few industry observers, myself included, expected great things from the founder's return.
Jobs had other plans. He led one of the greatest corporate reinventions in American history, first rudely discarding ventures like the Newton and Apple's licensing of the Mac operating system to "Mac clone" manufacturers, then shipping the first of many versions of the iMac and the NeXT-based Mac OS X operating system.
The iPod turned Apple into a consumer electronics competitor, the iPhone reset and continues to redefine the smartphone, and the iPad took ownership of the tablet-computing market. Apple software such as iMovie let "mere mortals," as Jobs liked to say during his product keynotes, aspire to making their own Pixar-worthy productions.
The iTunes Store liberated music buyers from the recording industry's condescending attempts to control music downloads. The App Store freed mobile phone software from the dictates of the wireless carriers -- although it then subjected them to Apple's largely unaccountable curation.
Even as Apple grew to be the most valuable company on the stock market, Jobs refused the role of corporate statesman. He wore the same jeans-plus-black-turtleneck outfit everywhere, he answered random emails in the middle of the night (once to me), and he took $1 a year in salary.
Jobs rarely spoke about what pushed him to do all this. But I was fortunate to be in the audience one time he did so at length, in his 2005 commencement address at Stanford University (watch below). He spoke plainly but eloquently about what he'd learned at college after dropping out, how he'd recovered after getting fired from Apple, and how surviving a first round with pancreatic cancer reminded him not to let curiosity and creativity fade: "Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life."
As I've grown older, left a job I once loved and lost family members, I've had reason to think again about that speech. This is one of those times.
The universe doesn't have quite the same shape that it once did. Thanks, Steve; you did good.
