With the EXO, French company EXOCONCEPT is looking to revolutionize the personal watercraft market. Silent, thanks to an electric motor, the EXO doesn’t look or sound like what one expects from a jet ski and it doesn’t even pump out any smoke or gasoline fumes.
Rather than standing or sitting, the rider lies on the craft, with his body parallel to the water and his feet dragging behind. It’s quite a departure from the usual set up, and, especially in black, the EXO looks like a design that would appeal to Batman.
The carbon fiber body keeps the EXO light and improves acceleration; with the batteries in, the whole thing weighs under 220 pounds. It’s speed, between 15 and 27 knots (between 17 and 31mph) leaves something to be desired, though. The speed record for a personal watercraft is 92mph, but even an electric jet ski has hit 50mph. Depending on the model, the batteries hold a charge of between one and two and a half hours.
EXOCONCEPT premiered the design at the Cannes Boat Show in August, and hopes to have models on the water by early next year. It hopes to sell the new ride to watersport centers, but is also taking individual, customized orders, and expects to charge just under $1,000.
